When the Mutants Are Running Amok, Who from the Sewers Will Be Able to End Their Wraith?

Where Heroes Move Against Growing Turmoil

by RiftMode

Crouched on this old fire escape that’s rusting out from under me, my bo staff is at the ready. This is what we turtles do – we observe, then we act. And right now, I’m watching a scene unfold before my eyes. The environment is alive to look at – shifting and pulsing as if it were alive. The shadows on the walls of the alleyway are active, and the neon strips of light cut through the haze of the atmosphere like powerful laser beams. And there, at the far end of the corridor, is Casey Jones. He’s the first to appear from the mist, his hockey gear clanking with each purposeful step he takes across the wet pavement. The sound of his footsteps bounces up from the metal of the fire escape I’m perched on, and a swarming mass of loose papers and trash is swept up by his presence as if he’d commanded the very world to react. The puddles of water on the ground reflect the colors of the neon strips in them, and the ripples in the water distort the images reflected there. In the distance, the rumble of machines is felt, but it shifts and pulses in time with the activity in the alleyway below. Each machine is affected by Casey’s presence, as if they too recognized the presence of this evil-doing hockey-masked vigilante. It’s the kind of entrance that my buddy would make, and it’s so cool and effortlessly done that I’m left impressed and even intimidated by the man, despite our numerous training sessions together. Casey Jones is a force to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.

Master Splinter emerged from the shadows behind Casey Jones in silence. His presence immediately commanded attention, and I felt a change in the atmosphere as I watched him approach. No one on this planet, and probably nowhere in the universe, commands respect like Master Splinter. His quiet, unassuming presence was contrasted by the gentle rustling of his robes as he moved. The sound was almost indistinguishable from the background noise of the city, but I could feel it. The dust on the ground seemed to clear in a subtle wave in front of him as if the air itself was parting to allow him passage. I felt a surge of respect mixed with a little fear at his presence. That kind of fear sharpens the mind and keeps one focused, however. I took a deep breath and reminded myself to stay focused on the two powerful individuals descending upon us. The atmosphere was charged with unspoken conflict between the two of them, and it seemed to take on a life of its own as they moved through the corridor. Their advancement created a sort of advancing pulse of anticipation and tension that stirred up the environment around us, making the shadows seem darker, the sounds louder, and the surfaces sharper. It was as if something massive was building to an explosive moment, and I focused intently on the two of them. I tightened my grip on my bo staff, recognizing that tonight was definitely not going to be boring. Down in the sewers, Leo, Raph, and Mikey were probably missing all the completely righteous action that was unfolding above them.
