BioEden starts with the land. Long before any structure is erected or system fires up, the soil begins to stir with curiosity. The Keeper’s arrival is akin to the first gentle warmth of spring, and the long-dormant field comes back to life. The very terrain of BioEden has been waiting for so long and remembers what once was. As the Keeper begins to recycle the mountain of debris that once weighed heavily upon the land, the ground can feel the difference. The lakes that still hold great clouds of the Great Unraveling look warily at the solar array before it. Ripples on the lake’s surface reflect the array in curious patterns as if to ask the question of whether or not this time around, healing can finally take root. Clean, purified water begins to flow through the newly established water systems across the land, and rivers respond with gentle shifts and changes, as if stretching after long neglect. Each dome erected across the earthy expanse pulses with gentle intention. The air that once was so thick with noxious pollution softens with each new purification effort, returning to the Keeper’s nostrils the distinct smell of before. The old ruins sit silently in worn, decayed piles, seemingly tilting ever so slightly in the Keeper’s direction with hope. BioEden does not rush to respond to the Keeper’s hard work at restoration. Rather, it observes, adjusts, and in the end, slowly but eventually, trust is granted as it comes to realize that someone is once again tending to it, listening for its quiet signals and carefully responding. The environment does not speak in words of oral tradition. Rather, it speaks in change – shifts in temperature, in wind, and in the dull terrain itself that is slowly but perceptibly brightened. The Keeper’s gentle, hard work continues as BioEden responds.
The environment in BioEden responds first to the forms that dwell within the domes that the Keeper has created. The long-dormant soil responds first to the slight warming of the ground near each of the structures. It seems to remember the footprints and ways of long-extinct species as the first tender shoots of new plant life begin to stir. Subtle shifts in the humidity and temperature that the Keeper has set for the land are met with eager cooperation by the emerging flora. And when the cocoons burst open and the new creatures emerge, the environment responds with soft, caressing breezes and perfectly calibrated microclimates. The once-hesitant rivers now flow with a newfound purpose, their surfaces reflecting the silhouettes of the newly reintroduced animals with pride. The pollution fades, the air brightens, and carries the sounds of new life to distant corners of the planet. Even the distant wastelands press forward silently, unwilling to be left out of the rapidly unfolding process of healing that is occurring on this planet. Each of the various Guilds is influencing the environment in ways both subtle and marked, creating complex interactions and adapting in turn to the various approaches being taken. But in the end, the planet remains a steady, patient, and grateful world, willing to grow and heal at the Keeper’s pace, using every dome, every purified river, and revived species to carry on a gentle, ongoing dialogue of healing, which is not a single event but rather a long, meandering conversation between two parties – the planet and the one tending it.
