I sit silently in the cold waiting room of the police station. Fluorescent lights above the chairs buzz interminably. My heavy eyes close. A world of a mentally tortured landscape is let loose. The cold, dirty, hard tiled floor of the waiting room disappears. I am in a sun-lit meadow or holy sanctum so full of wonderful, loving tender affection that it is such that it turns in a split second to a most horrible horror. Each time I reach for it, it turns, and it shatters into a thousand sharp, painful pieces of some hideous argument, some invisible bruise, some unacceptable paternal betrayal. Perhaps because I have spent so long navigating a surreal landscape of ever-shifting floor plan between memory and dream, I am a good navigator of a peculiar sort. I traverse the various spaces solving a puzzle as I go. It looks from the outside much like the various mental defensive strategies which over the years I have developed to protect myself from so much emotional pain. But each door that opens brings a horrible and tortuous decision: is this beautiful and comfortable deception better than the brutal, harsh reality of why I am sitting in this precinct waiting room? My head is a place that I cannot leave. My heart returns again and again to the root cause of my destruction.
