When Things Are Getting Toxic, What Will You Do to Embrace the Sludge Style?

Where Relentless Chaos Becomes the Only Constant

by RiftMode

They surged forward through the chaos, driven not by bravery but by an unshakable defiance; they were determined to stop the world from falling into disorder without a fight. The ground beneath him writhed with twisted vegetation, bubbling up like a cauldron of malevolent intent. Each step sent vibrations through the sludge‑strewn terrain, while the air thrummed with the growls of creatures warped by eldritch forces, as if the land itself were turning ravenous and hostile. With every glance, new horrors appeared: trees sagged under thick, oozing filth; the earth cracked open to reveal glowing, corrupt veins; distant structures were swallowed by creeping muck that moved as if it possessed its own will. Behind him, explosions erupted, and gunfire shattered the tension, while infected waves surged forward in a relentless cadence—each onslaught louder, faster, and more determined than the last. Yet he pressed on, fueled by adrenaline and a sharpened sense of urgency. The battlefield reacted to his every move: sludge splattered high as he sprinted, corrupted steam burst from newly formed fissures when they fired, and tendrils of muck lashed through the air as if trying to pull him back. It was chaos with a heartbeat, eager to consume anything that resisted. They did not waver.

As they ventured deeper into the infested territory, the environment morphed into a living nightmare that demanded constant motion. Brief stretches of semi‑open wasteland offered exhilarating chances for speed—moments when vehicles became lifelines, loud and unyielding, smashing through the swarms with satisfying impact. Each time they flattened an infected creature into roadkill, a surge of triumph followed—proof that even amid disaster, tools existed to turn adversity into advantage. The peril, however, was unrelenting. Goblins erupted from sludge‑covered crevices, snarling and charging with unpredictable ferocity, brandishing makeshift weapons. Infected thronged from every direction, a tide of bodies propelled by an ancient, buried force. Still, they persevered—gunfire crackled, grenades detonated, and bursts of energy from special abilities carved pathways through the darkness. Every encounter became a relentless trial, forcing him to adapt, evolve, and unleash new capabilities just to stay ahead as the threats intensified. Eventually, extraction points materialized—glowing beacons of hope piercing the haze like distant promises. Reaching them would not be easy. The ground shifted beneath his feet, and something immense lurked below the muck, ever‑watchful and ready to emerge. Along his path, artifacts glimmered in the corrupted soil, waiting to be unearthed as tokens of progress against the storm—each a testament that advancement required a willingness to dive deeper into peril. And through it all, they kept moving: swiftly, purposefully, onward.

New mode, new nightmares:

Retrieval Mode opens up new ways to play for everyone: pick a map, collect relics, and reach an extraction point before hordes of zombies catch up to you. But move fast, or you’ll draw the attention of the Sludge, who wants you dead. The new mode is currently playable on four maps: Church of the Damned, High Octane, Impasse, and Demon Bait.

Alongside the new mode, the Retrieval Update includes several gameplay additions:

  • New zombies to fight – Goblins: These small enemies come in groups, attack the same target, and can revive each other as long as one of the three remains alive.
  • Four new ways to purge the zombie invasion – New weapons and tools include the Le Clairon assault rifle, the Flamethrower, the Thunderstick, and the Saw Trap, which tears the infected apart.
  • A batch of upgrades for day-to-day missions – New fixes and updates have been implemented, including the ability to dash, Trials Season 2, PC local servers, plus vehicle and bot improvements.
