Beneath the Mansion, Something Still Refuses Sleep…

Past Every Locked Door, Dread Quietly Grows

by RiftMode

I should have left when the front gate disappeared behind me. As I stepped into the house, I felt a chill run up my spine. The house seemed to know that I was there. Every corridor seemed to stretch on a bit too long, and the shadows in the corners of the rooms hung on for a fraction of a second longer than was necessary. The creaks of the floorboards beneath my feet seemed to come from above. I had come to the house in search of answers about the disappearance of a young girl some years prior. Instead, I found myself becoming entrapped in a web of old grief that had been transformed into an all-consuming obsession. The house seemed to be bursting at the seams with secrets, and they seemed to be breathing out from under the floorboards. The air was thick with the memory of things that nobody wanted to remember. There were creaks of a step, and far-off sounds that made me jump with fear. A closing of a door sent my heart racing with fear. The more I searched for answers in the house, the more I became lost between my fear and my reality. People’s faces were masks that hid their intentions. Kindness could be a disguise for something terrible. Every revelation seemed to uncover something more hideous. The dark, empty rooms of the house were not the worst thing. It was the feeling of being watched as I moved from room to room. The worst things that this house was holding were not monsters. They were people. As the truth about what had really happened in this house was slowly revealed to me, I could feel its eyes upon me from somewhere out of sight. Waiting for me to realize that some wounds will never heal, some secrets will never be told, and some houses must never be left.
