My first step back into this world feels like it could collapse around me at any moment. I keep moving, though, because every time I’ve stopped and turned to look back, the horizon swallowed me up. As I move, my arms swing, my breathing steadies, and the cadence of my strides becomes a prayer in this alien place. Rarely do I get a glimpse of home from here. It appears to me in fleeting images, like a lantern flickering through a thick fog. I take a step, and the image vanishes once more. But the wind at my back urges me on. It tugs me, and it pulls me, sometimes plunging down sharply in a new direction. A low, steady pulse originates somewhere in the distance. I’ve no idea whether it’s calling to me or warning me off. In the end, I opt to go towards it. As I move, the world around me seems to stretch and to bend to fit my choices, my hesitations, and my acts of courage. I have the feeling that something immense and ravenous is pursuing me. But I am not going to look over my shoulder to find out what it is. All that is real to me is forward. And all that is mine is forward.
