THE VR DIMENSION
The air is thick with the slow, affirmative beat of the Zone around me. I press down into the seriously soft earth with each step of my boots, the ground shying away from me as if something beneath it is shifting to listen to my passage. My mutt pads silently by my side, his ears perked up to pursue distant echoes of creaking metal, a lonely howl, and the snaps of unnaturally brittle structures collapsing in the darkness. I hyperventilate as the ground recedes before me, shrouded in impenetrable darkness, impenetrable in the same way that the Zone is. A series of impassive, twisted structures loom around me – ancient buildings of uncertain purpose – their abandoned windows glowing sickenly in the failing light of day. I remember reading long ago about energy leaking from these places like an open wound. The detector pulses faintly in my hand and steers me through the twisting pathways of what amounts to a slowly shifting minefield. And I can sense the presence of the Zone around me. I have the feeling that it is intent upon me. It watches and waits, massive and inert, as its secrets clamor against my inner surface with an unnatural, electric weight. The lengthening shadows twist and reach out around me like living, hungrier things. I pause for a beat as the air seems to change around me – cools, sharpens, resonates with a low, rumbling note that runs the length of my spine like a finger. When whatever is hunting in the dark here finally wakes up, I am going to be in a world of trouble. Fast.
