The blast hits like a physical force. A huge cloud of dust rips through the street, the shockwave traveling through the air and into the ground beneath you. Your weapon seems to be vibrating in your hands as you press yourself into the concrete slabs of the ruined building behind you. The air is thick and heavy, pushing against you with each breath you take. In the distance of the ruins of a street, somewhere behind the walls of splintered masonry, the revving of idle engines resounds low. Shooting erupts on the battlefield, each and every shot crisply distinct from the last. A bullet whizzes perilously close past your ear. It makes the air around you seem to snap. Raffling splinters of wood and razor-sharp metal fragments fall about your crouched form like countless projectiles.
Standing still means getting pinned. Getting pinned means dying. You run through the wreckage of destroyed cars, brought down barricades, and the frames of houses that seemed to have collapsed in the last explosion. Above, a smudged and torn sky is filled with heavy black and white clouds that are cut through by red-hot lines of fire. Burning streaks of light fall in rapid succession towards the ground. Now the essentials are real – the weight of the rifle, the pull of the rest of your gear, the magazine in your pocket, your breathing. Aim, Move, Reload, Seek Cover, Move Forward. Adrenaline fuels your fear, but you’re pushed forward nonetheless. The bare realization of momentum as survival grips your consciousness above the din of the assault.
I staggered down the lane on wobbly legs, clouds of dust trailing from my boots. I disappeared into the black smoke before the next burst of fire could complete the work that the last fight had begun.
