The sandy beach trembles long before night falls. The very sand appears to prepare for the coming horror by forming ridges and hillocks. The air is thick with the scent of salt and unknown things that have existed since time began. Old docks like tombstones twist outward in every direction. They look to have been stripped of paint and primer long ago and are now faded to a dingy grayish-brown. Rust spreads like some sort of brown syrup. Across from them, a line of trees recedes from the shore. Their brittle branches etch crude warning gestures across the darkening sky. And yet the Keepers linger. The Keepers must.
The darkness that threatens is born of the very ocean itself and pours out each night of the year from the drowned depths of the sea. Beasted across the water on blows of shadow, it caresses the air in space of the solid land and probes the edges of both with cold, wary, hungry curiosity. The lighthouse stands last. The only answer. The beam must not go out. The thing which comes out of the water to collect in a vast, hungry wall for the shore is not just dark. It hungers. It has an appetite. And the one thing this thing in the water, with the bottomless blackness of it, hungers for above all else is the extinction of all light. The Keepers, resolutely dedicated to his tasks, haul oil past howling wind; climb creaking stairs again and again; turn the seized machinery with sweat-drenched hands. They fight against the darkness. Below, the ocean transforms into a huge wall of water, a dense, crashing, roaring mass of dark deep water that threatens to engulf everything above it.
But the Keepers do not wait. The Keepers fight. The light from above is again cast down upon the darkness. The beam from the light again strikes the water before it. Only inches, but against the deep, that is victory.
