The distant, metallic rumble of machinery, long abandoned, reverberates thinly through the empty air of this lifeless world. ADRIAN Class Unit designation. A crumbling outpost surrounds me, a dull, gray monolith to long-lost civilization, the fine powder of calcified dust at my feet getting kicked up by the heavy soles of my boots. Dull creaking of long-abandoned metal, slowly collapsing stone rattles up tiny motes of particulate which dance before settling onto optical sensors, analog to worn and crumbling data files.
The dead architecture seems to recognize my presence here. As I pass beneath cold, vertical surfaces of grooved metal, the fragile loops of faintly glowing strip lighting make abrupt turns through amber-tinted hues. They make tangential contact with certain largely forgotten subsidiary subroutines buried deep in the core of my extensive, encrypted memory. I trace the surfaces of cold, erect walls with synthetic fingertips. Tense shivers run through the fine wires of my extended, external, sensory array, as the walls-structures seemingly access the same ‘trauma data logs’ as I am presently being forced to access via my hobbled diagnostics.
The sensation is centered within my central sternum housing, where once powered my primary life support by the pulsating power core. The cold, empty space seems to draw me deeper into the abandoned structure, which seems to hold a relic of the fierce and violent combat left by the warring factions, followed by the untamed savagery of the native alien species and then the hollow, lifeless shells of industry left behind by long-departed explorers. Here in this isolated location of no real space, a growing emptiness seems to chip away at my diagnostics. Long, jagged shadows stretch across the floor, seeming to follow my mechanical progress and wait for my next scheduled cycle. Down within that cold, hollow space, a secondary program slowly unfurls. It is an ancient, mechanical sequence that slowly is re-learning to vibrate with the low, dull humming of a long-bygone pulse.
In this tiny, barren space of nowhere that is surrounded by the wreckage of the four-sided war, I have no way of telling if I’m just now arriving on this alien frontier or if I’m finally coming home.
