THE VR DIMENSION
The sand is holding my ankles like cold hands. I can still taste the storm. The sharp metallic flavor is almost electric. The wreckage of the things that have been broken seems to have been deliberately twisted and then rearranged in this way. I pick up the walkie-talkie once again. Thin whispers of voice pull from the static. Go on. That is all that is said. But I am being urged to continue. Despite everything within me that is screaming to turn around and go back, I am being urged to continue on. The forest ahead of me is a massive shape. The curled branches of the trees form a mouth in the center of the tree, and I can feel my pulse stuttering as I make my way beneath the canopy of the forest. The ground beneath my feet is damp and soft. With every step that I take, it seems to be sinking further and further into something below, like something wants to keep me from moving ahead. I can hear a low groaning sound ahead of me. It sounds like wood and metal being strained to their limits. Or perhaps something alive and being dragged along the ground. I don’t want to know which it is. The air is thick. It is making it difficult for me to breathe. It feels like I am pulling fabric through my lungs. Every now and then I catch a glimpse of something pale and quick out of the corner of my eye. But before I can focus on it properly, it has vanished. This place seems to be aware of my presence. It is patient. It is almost amused by my progress so far. I am terrified of what might follow me if I stop to think about it now. The silence behind me is far sharper than the darkness ahead of me. I continue to move forward, my heart in my mouth. I am not sure how this nightmare is going to end.
