Do you feel it gathering? The air tightens in upon us; the walls shudder and seem to be breathing through split teeth. Something heavy is pressing down upon us from below, but it has no body. A thin line of light travels up the legs of the furniture before it disappears. The blackness of the corners is increasing with every passing moment. Stay close to me. If you hear your name called, do not answer. The cold earthy smell of old graves and yellowed photographs rises from the baseboards. The ceiling creaks and shudders. Dark shapes pull back from the doorways and dwindle to nothing. Slowly, they seep back into the rooms, wheeling about us in wide circles. Each time it breathes, the fog on the windows gathers in heavy, dragging streaks. The ground is tipping, and the air is colder in patches as if it were moving in great waves towards us.
Don’t be afraid, it just feeds the curse. The invisible hands at work draw the curtains. Everything seems to be trying to leave, but I have come here for a reason, and I’m not going to leave till I’ve done what I came to do. The air gets thicker and syrupier now, while the presence of malice in it marks the walls with its presence and lodges in our lungs. A heavy vibration runs along the soles of our feet and warns us: turn back now while there’s still time. But this is why I have come here. By the light of these candles I call upon the names of the long dead; I try to unseal the closed doors and to break the chains that hold you. I command you: un-cohere! Shadow at the threshold, turn back now! Go back to the dark abyss from which you came here. You have no claim here, no vessel, no voice.
It slowly forms and fills the room with its unseen presence. I hold up my hand to stop it and say the words that I came here to say with the candles burning, with the long-dead’s names called, with the doors unsealed and chains broken.
What was summoned will be released. What was bound in the dark will be cast out of this space. By breath and blood and spirit and will – I dissolve the curse.
