I’ve come to realize momentum is not given to you, but rather you create it by working hard, putting in time and effort, and learning from mistakes as you go. Each time I work hard and push through with a bit of grit and determination, I learn more about the world. Life has a rhythm, and the way I am moving through life creates a steady beat of progress. There is something comfortable about the sound of tires on old pavement and the warmth of the sun on my shoulders. The road ahead is a promise yet to be written, and for the most part, I am aware of the small and often unglamorous steps of progress that I am taking one push at a time. Sometimes that progress is loud, other times it is barely noticeable, but it is there, and it counts. I try to notice the small mercies, like a cool breeze on a hot day or the outline of a distant skyline, a reminder that there is more to life than what is right in front of me and that it is all worth it. Many of the people I pass on the road will nod in recognition of the hard work and weight I carry. Maybe they are carrying their own version of heavy. Maybe we are all just trying to get somewhere for our own reasons, reasons that may not be exactly the same but that rhyme in some way.
As I make my way with purpose, I notice things that I would have walked by before. The cracks in the sidewalk are stories of the people that have crossed this ground before me. The rust on an old railing isn’t decay; it’s endurance. The sky is always changing colors whether I like it or not, and it is a constant reminder that things change whether I want them to or not. More roads, new or old, lie ahead of me on this journey. Rolling forward, committed to finishing what I started, ties me to something greater than myself. I don’t have to explain this to anyone or justify it to anyone. It is what it is. My journey, that is the entirety of it. And the meaning of that journey isn’t at the end of the road somewhere. The meaning is in the persistence. Every effort, every strand of energy, every mile is worth it. With each creaking, clanking stretch of road behind me, I am sturdier. I am a little braver. I am better prepared to take on whatever is around the next bend in the road. That is the point of it all. That is all that matters.
