When the Loop Breaks, Who Will Be Watching Me?

I Felt the Darkness Studying Me in Silence

by RiftMode

I never imagined how quickly the quiet could turn against me. The moment I stepped inside, the air felt wrong—too still, too heavy, as if the house itself were holding its breath and waiting for me to make the first mistake. My flashlight cut through the dark in a narrow beam, but every shadow seemed to lean toward me, stretching just a little too far, as though reaching for my throat. I kept telling myself to stay calm, to focus on the evidence, to remember the training that had carried me through countless scenes before this one. But nothing in my past prepared me for the way the floorboards groaned beneath my feet, not with the usual tired creak of old wood, but with a slow, deliberate complaint, like something buried deep below was waking up. I could feel the cold pushing against my skin, slipping under my clothes, crawling up my spine. It wasn’t the kind of cold that came from winter air or drafty windows; it was the kind that felt aware of me, the kind that pressed in with intention. Every step I took echoed down the hallway, bouncing back in a way that made it impossible to tell if the sound belonged to me or something walking just out of sight. I tried to steady my breathing, but the silence swallowed every exhale, leaving me with the unsettling sense that I was breathing for two. My gloved fingers brushed the wall, and the texture felt strange—rough in some places, smooth in others, as if the surface had been touched, scraped, and handled by countless hands that didn’t belong here. I moved deeper, scanning the floor for any sign of disturbance, any trace that could help me understand what happened in this place.

But the deeper I went, the more the house seemed to shift around me, subtly rearranging itself, closing off paths I swore had been open moments before. The darkness pressed closer, thick enough that I felt it brushing against my shoulders. I could hear faint sounds—soft taps, distant shuffles, the whisper of something dragging across the floor. Each noise seemed to come from a different direction, circling me, testing me, waiting for me to slip. My heartbeat thudded in my ears, loud enough that I worried it might give away my position. I tightened my grip on the taser, knowing it was laughably inadequate against whatever moved in these halls, but it was all I had. The smell in the air shifted suddenly, turning metallic and sharp, like the scent of old blood left too long in the cold. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to keep moving, to push forward even as my instincts screamed at me to run. The hallway narrowed, funneling me toward a doorway that seemed to pulse with darkness. I hesitated, listening. The tapping stopped. The dragging stopped. Everything stopped. The silence became a living thing, pressing against my ears, waiting for me to breathe, to move, to break it. I stepped through the doorway, and the temperature dropped instantly, biting into my skin. My breath fogged in front of me, hanging in the air longer than it should, as if reluctant to disappear. I swept my light across the room, and for a moment, I thought I saw something shift in the corner—too fast to identify, too slow to dismiss. My pulse hammered. I took another step, and the floor groaned beneath me, louder this time, almost a warning. I knew then, with absolute certainty, that I wasn’t alone. Something was here with me, something patient, something hungry, something that had been waiting in the dark long before I arrived.
